Mazda has long trumpeted the benefits of the rotary engine, but their words have fallen on deaf ears as the last Renesis powerplant was built on June 22nd.
While it marks a sad chapter in the company's history, Mazda president Takashi Yamanouchi said "Production of the RX-8 will end, but the rotary engine will live on as an important part of Mazda's spirit."
Despite vague promises from Mazda's PR department saying they are "zealously working on new models to house the next-generation rotary engine," the powerplant's future remains in doubt as traditional engines have become increasingly efficient. Mazda's financial situation has compounded the matter as resources that could have been used to develop a new rotary engine have been diverted towards fuel saving SKYACTIV technologies.
We likely won't see a new rotary engine, in a mainstream model, for a few years - if ever again - but there's word that the company is developing a hydrogen-electric vehicle that could use a rotary range-extending engine.
